Finally got around to learning ZBrush's material mixer tools... makes me wish Maya, and other 3d programs, could pull off shader/material creation this quickly & easily!

I intend to have Sparkster in an actual stance, and arm him with his trusty sword next time around.
...probably should have him standing on an actual surface too!

(Oh, be sure to watch in HD!! The standard resolution on this site is atrocious!
Although, I'm not too thrilled with how much DA grays-out the HD footage either. :p )

Im a fan of Sparkster games and i love this redesign!
Mostly because it can have now his own cartoon series in a style of those Tale Spin, etc.

Haha thanks -- that would be really interesting to see this guy in a Disney Afternoon-esque cartoon! Wow..Tale Spin.. now that's something I haven't seen in years lol, I think it's time for me to re-visit some of those episodes. :D

Oh Sparkster... Your brilliant gimmick was just too amazing for a reboot...

Lol - there actually is a reboot on the XBox arcade. No idea if it's any good, but the designs looked interesting.

That's what I was referencing. They nerfed the boost and made the entire game both too slow and revolve around using the rocket all the time, instead of having more delicate segments where you could die if you overused it.

Agh :X that's totally lame! What a shame to mess up the game mechanics like that..

yeah that game was not fun...Sparkster was all about flying on a rocket whenever you want for me...Bouncing against walls or enemies...

What a shame... what a shame...
Sounds like a broken chain of communication & management in the game design dept. The original mechanics are what made the game so dynamic!

Eh, c'est la vie. The art is fun to look at..I guess if I see that new game more as an animated portfolio piece, rather than a game, it's easier to put up with lolol.

Very cool. I miss the whiskers though, they always made him look masculine and serious.

Hmm - that's a very interesting point, I'll experiment with that idea while building him his sword.

Thanks for your comment! :)

That's awesome that you got to submit this to the film category. I've always had to do my turntables in flash and submit them to the flash category.

Anyway, the materials all look great. :D

Funny you should mention the flash category, because I was about to do that myself. lol

I almost forgot DA now accepts movie files, so that helped a lot.
It's handy since I can also share & post the videos on other sites like Facebook, and get critiques and suggestions from friends online.

Yeah they used to be incredibly picky about what gets into the film category. No turntables or time-lapses. I think they originally were concerned about storage space. But if they're doing it now I might submit a couple. :D

Lol thank you!
I actually did use other game characters as a reference, such as Crash Bandicoot, as well as Ratchet (from Ratchet & Crank) and Sly Cooper.

I wanted him to have a more athletic, leaner shape to his body -- which I felt adds a sense of speed to him.

Thanks! :)

I don't think I'll be animating him any time soon, but I would like to get him into a couple different action poses. It'll be a whole other process if I am to animate him, because ZBrush isn't an animation program :/

However, the low-res game mesh I made of him (which I will post sometime soon) will probably be animated in the Unity game engine.

I always thought he was a bit rounder, at least because he had more equipment on or something.
Rocket Knight Adventures (the first game) was a really great game for Genesis and I am glad I played it : )

Yea, he was shorter & stockier in the original games.
I decided to take some artistic liberties and change up a couple things here and there, because I felt he needed a body shape with a silhouette that looked more interesting in a 3d format.
I also wanted to add a little extra color, since his original armor is very monochromatic -- which is perfectly fine as a pixel sprite, but in 3d it looked a bit drab.

Thanks for your comment! :)

No problem!

And I guess so. He looks a little bit more like Sly Cooper's physique now.
The HD Rocket Knight game looked like it didn't appeal to me so well.
